Sunday dawned bright, mild and calm with the rain during the week dampening down the dust and providing a grippy surface for August racing. It was great to have the downhillers back and racing, adding to the positive vibe around the Awaba Park as well.
After the AGM was completed, (Congratulations to Josh, Dallas, Waz and John as office bearers) 55 racers headed out of a reverse start from the usual finish line, and backwards through the tunnel before jumping out to bomb down the water bars on Jenkins Road, onto S Bend Road, Salad Bowl, Murder Horn, Wayne’s World then reversing onto the Tunnel Loop, climbing back up from the outbound tunnel and then the “kids shortcut” from Siberia back to the Trail Head. A meaty five km loop (that everyone loved – big ups to the track setter – thanks Phil – ED).
The first placegetters were as follows.
A Grade Women: Laura Renshaw
A Grade Men: Archie Gibson (Although only 0.8 of a second in front of Caleb Agostino after an epic five lap dual between them)
B Grade Women: Tanya Clark
B Grade Men: Thomas Newman (Special mention must also go to 15 year old Alex Clifton who came 4th in his first ever race!!!)
C Grade Women: Ella Fairhall
C Grade Men: Ben Bohringer
D Grade men: Callum Duvollet
E Grade Men: Isaac Fedorow
E-Bike Women: Casey Billing
E-Bike Men: Waz Turnball
Kids Race: Sophie Fairhall
