Round 3 of the NSW Downhill Gravity Series rolled into the legendary Awaba MTB Park, a nationally renowned mountain biking venue, proudly hosted by the Hunter Mountain Bike Association. With some of Australia’s best downhill riders on the start list, everyone knew this round was going to deliver the goods — and it didn’t disappoint!
The junior categories were truly one for the ages. In the U13’s, Coda Tyas just edged out Benson Archer by an incredible 0.04 seconds — yes, four hundredths of a second!
The U15’s kept the crowd on their toes. Taj Thornton laid down a blistering 3:59.333, while top seed Declan Jordan had to take a re-run after stopping to help another rider on course. All eyes were on him as he dropped in for his second run — he gave it everything, but just fell short, finishing 2nd with a 4:05.180.
In the U15 Female category, competition was fierce, with Zuri Acheson taking the top step, closely followed by Luca Defina.
As the day went on, times continued to tumble. Bryn Cousins stormed to victory in U17’s with an outstanding 3:52.172, while Oliver Kinghorn dominated the U19’s category, setting a scorching 3:53.160.
Then it was time for the Elite Men — and the stage was set. Troy Weinert had his eyes firmly on the prize, with local legend Will Ireland right on his heels. Under heavy pressure, Troy delivered a flying run of 3:43.132, claiming the fastest time of the day! Will Ireland wasn’t far behind, locking in 2nd place with another impressive performance. To fill the podium coming in 3rd was another local legend Regan Arthur, making it an Elite HMBA member’s whitewash.
The event was a huge success, drawing riders from far and wide to tackle one of Australia’s most demanding downhill trails — The Monkey.
