HMBA XC Race Results – Awaba – 16/06/19

The crispness of winter was certainly felt on Sunday morning, with clear skies meaning that temperatures were in the single digits as the flock of Riders gathered to register for the June XC race out at the Awaba Mountain Bike Park.

The recent rains meant that the track conditions were almost perfect, and with only a light covering of surface dust everyone had plenty of grip on what was a fun and fairly flat course set by our XC coordinator (maybe racing the RT 4 hour the day before mellowed him???).

Despite some of our regular racers choosing to rest following the previous day at Glenrock we managed to gather a strong field of 72 Riders including plenty of new faces and some that were having their first taste of racing at Awaba. Congratulations go to Brian Dunkin and Laura Renshaw for taking out A Grade.

A big thank you also to everyone that made a donation for Beyond Blue – we still need to count all the coins but we do know that we raised over $120 – nice work HMBA Members!

HMBA XC Race Results – Awaba Rd2 – 28/04/19

A ‘relaxed’ starting time for Round 2 of 10am (following our AGM and Presentation – report and pics to follow) meant that the chill of the morning had dissipated and Riders were able to circulate in some magic Autumnal weather – not that they were reflecting on how perfect the temperature or trail conditions were but instead they were busy tackling one of the tougher XC courses we have seen in some time.  At almost 7 km in length Riders spent a bit longer out on course than usual but it was only the legs that were complaining when they crossed the finish line!

With 76 XC Riders entered, including a healthy field of kids tackling the Development Track before the main event, our strongest field of female entrants in over 12 months, and an always enthusiastic turn-out for the DH side, it was a busy day out at Awaba Mountain Bike Park – a great showcase and test for our revised carpark area.

Riders were also appreciating some of the other improvements made out on course, including a smoother Jenkins Rd section and the newly installed rock armouring after Rocky Corner and Skids for Kids (or should that be Ricky Corner and Skids for Kehoe – thanks again RK for all your hard work out at the track during the week to fix up the nemesis of some people).

It was great to have Oneills Mobile Coffee Van back on site – please keep on supporting them so that we can all get that caffiene and carb hit either pre or post race.

HMBA XC Race Results – Awaba Rd1 – 17/02/19

First full XC race of the year and Awaba was buzzing – and not just because we had a Coffee Van on site!  With 74 riders entered in the main XC Race, at least a dozen young shredders in the Kids Race, all of the supporters and the DH Crew milling around the carpark areas there was certainly a great vibe out at the track today.

Dean K set a ‘balanced’ course today – tough and fun in equal measures.  Climbing up the lower half of ‘Skids for Kids’ is always a challenge but rewards with some fun flowy trail on the downside.  With temperatures climbing riders felt the pressure of knocking out up to 5 laps of the punchy course – Brian Dunkin, Owen Tooley and Nick Woods were like a freight train motoring though the singletrack overtaking backmarkers, crossing the finish line in that order.  Well done gents.

And a great performance from some determined ladies out there today – Em Dreaper made the call to step up to ladies A Grade and powered through 4 laps to take the win.  Claire Knott came in second female (with plans to step up a grade next time!).

A big congrats to the youngsters that looped around the Development Course – Dallas lead an eager crew around multiple laps with the following riders chalking up the most circuits:

1) Leon Cho
2) Mason Corley
3) Jonann Thompson
4) Riley Tongue
5) Caleb Cho

Having Oneills Mobile Coffee Van for a caffiene and carb hit at the finish line was certainly welcome and something that we hope to continue throughout the year.

HMBA XC Evening Race 3 Results – Awaba 13/02/19

40 riders enjoyed cooler conditions at Awaba for the third and final Wednesday night race. The same great track as used for the last two weeks was again enjoyable with quite a few people squeezing in 5 laps before the cutoff time.

Great to see some fast ladies out on course with Emily coming in just ahead of Laura and both of them ahead of most of the field.

It was also good to see the family connections out there. Father and son Geoff and Bryan were back racing after being absent for much of last year. And the Hardy brothers, Andrew and Nicholas were out there circulating as well.

HMBA XC Evening Race 1 Results – Awaba 30/01/19

WOW! – It wasn’t just the heat and humidity that had Riders talking tonight – Dean K delivered the goods on one of the most enjoyable tracks that has been used for Club Racing in some time.

Combining part of the Siberia Loop, Yellow Loop and Development Trail resulted in a flowy track with minimal climbing and plenty of fun for the 40 Riders (of all ages) that turned up.  A total distance of 4km meant that Riders knocked out up to 5 laps (and sweated about 2 litres each) over the course of the 60 minute race.

We will be out there again next Wednesday evening – come along and see what short course evening races are all about.
